What is Clinafloxacin?

Clinafloxacin is a new fourth generation quinolone that belongs to the antibacterial fluoroquinolone group. It has broad-spectrum activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, aerobes and anaerobes.

Quinolones work by inhibiting the bacterial DNA gyrase or the topoisomerase IV enzyme, thereby inhibiting DNA replication and transcription. Quinolones can enter cells easily and therefore are often used to treat intracellular pathogens.

Clinafloxacin is still under clinical development and is currently not being marketed. Recent studies have shown varying degrees of effectiveness, as well as toxicity (i.e. sever phototoxicity and hypoglycaemia).
