Why is this medication prescribed?

Clinafloxacin is a fourth generation quinolone that belongs to the antibacterial fluoroquinolone group. It has broad-spectrum activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, aerobes and anaerobes.

Quinolones work by inhibiting the bacterial DNA gyrase or the topoisomerase IV enzyme, thereby inhibiting DNA replication and transcription. Quinolones can enter cells easily and therefore are often used to treat intracellular pathogens.

According to a comparative analysis, clinafloxacin is one of the most potent agents against S. pneumoniae. Furthermore, clinafloxacin has been studied primarily in hospitalized adults for the treatment of serious and potentially life-threatening infections, including nosocomial pneumonia, community-acquired pneumonia, febrile neutropenia, complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated skin and soft tissue infections, endocarditis, and acute gynecologic infections.

However, some studies have shown severe toxicity (i.e. sever phototoxicity and hypoglycaemia).
